Nothing will run up the electric bill like running the air conditioning during the recent extremely hot weather. Mecklenburg County residents who have trouble paying their summer cooling bills can get help through the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP).

Mecklenburg County Public Health will be offering free mpox vaccines at the Charlotte Pride Festival this weekend as the World Health Organization recently declared mpox a global public health emergency based on an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo related to a strain of mpox that can cause more serious complications.  

Mecklenburg County will host Saturdays on Stitt, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, at the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center, 430 Stitt Road, Charlotte, N.C. near Eastway Drive and North Tryon Street.

The list of what can be recycled and dropped off at Mecklenburg County’s full-service recycling centers is much longer. Mecklenburg County’s enhanced recycling program now allows residents to drop off wood waste at three of our staffed full-service centers. (see list below)  

Mecklenburg County is installing free public Wi-Fi at more than a dozen parks and recreation centers — helping to bridge the digital divide between residents who have access to technology and the internet, and those who do not.

Small business owners can get free training from the Mecklenburg County Office of Economic Development next spring, and gain the tools they need to grow their businesses.

Public Health is making it easier for residents to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for fresh healthy foods. In partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Food Policy Council and Charlotte Regional Farmers Market, SNAP/EBT and the SNAP Double Bucks program will be accepted at the area’s largest farmers market.

Parks and preserves are now open. Greenways are reopening with most being open by end of the day (Friday, Aug. 9).

Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. Diorio announced today her plans for retirement. Diorio is currently serving her 11th year as County Manager.  She informed the Board of County Commissioners during a closed session on Wednesday, August 7. Diorio’s retirement will be effective July 1, 2025.

Several members from the Mecklenburg County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) recently received awards from NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) North Carolina at their first CIT Stars 2024 Awards Luncheon.
